MY ART IS MY MUSIC

JAY JACOBS

I believe I was meant to be a rock n roll star, but I had no musical talent. Painting has become my musically instrument. My art is a visual lyrical interpretation of the music in my head. I use lines, colors, shapes, and textures to glide your eyes across the entire surface. With my background in engineering and medicine, there is a natural analytical and intuitive form to my art. The music in my subconscious determines how I interact with each piece. My underlying moods, emotions, and experiences affect what I apply to the canvas. The viewers’ mood, emotions, and experiences will dictate what they see and feel. This creates that individual bond between viewer and the artwork.

Early in my career, I learned that copying other artists was never satisfying. I needed to find my own voice that reflected my inner self. Once I discovered that my love was in abstract expressionism, I wanted a unique style. My goal is to create artwork with a free-flowing complexity that engages the viewer with each viewing. Staying true to my artistic voice challenges me every time I enter my studio. Maintaining my uniqueness keeps my art fresh. Marianne Mitchell, an accomplished abstract artist, instructor, and mentor, describes my art as “strong and unique. It stands out from the same old abstract work.”

My media of choice is oil paint for it vivid colors and the ability to blend layers. Palette knives are my favorite tools, creating the texture and lines that fill my canvas. I will rarely use brushes. My aversion to cleaning brushes led to this style.

I approach a painting without any preconceived ideas. I start by applying random marks. My initial palette is chosen randomly. Once I have my first layer down, I let the painting determine my next step. Evaluating the subtle lines, color and texture on the surface, I progress layer upon layer until finalizing the picture. The piece is complete when it demonstrates a free-flowing visual lyrical interpretation that is in sync with my “inner vibes”.

Do you have music in your head. My art is looking for collectors who want to engage with the free-flowing style. ARE YOU THAT COLLECTOR?
